How to reach
By air, Sindhudurg Airport at Chipi is the closest, with a car from there to Malvan, Tarkarli, Vengurla or Sawantwadi. From Goa, many people arrive at Mopa or Dabolim and drive across. By road from Mumbai, Pune or Kolhapur it is a long day, so start early. By train, the Konkan Railway has stations at places such as Kudal, Sindhudurg, Sawantwadi Road and Kankavli, and a cab covers the last stretch.
Malvan: the fort and the food
Sindhudurg Fort stands on an island just off Malvan and is reached by a short boat ride. Allow a couple of hours. Malvan is also known for its local seafood cooking, so plan at least one proper meal at a local place instead of eating at the hotel.
Tarkarli and Devbag: the beach days
Tarkarli is the beach village most visitors picture, with clear water and, in season, water sports. Devbag is nearby, where the Karli river meets the sea, and the backwater views are especially nice at sunrise or sunset. Do both in one day if you want, but do not rush. These are places to slow down.
Vengurla and the quieter side
Vengurla has a working harbour, quieter beaches and a slower pace. It suits guests who want fewer crowds. Sawantwadi, inland, is known for its lakeside town, old palace area and traditional lacquerware crafts.
A simple 3-day plan
Day 1: arrive, settle in and spend the evening on the beach at Tarkarli. Day 2: morning boat to Sindhudurg Fort from Malvan, lunch in Malvan, afternoon at Devbag for the sunset. Day 3: Vengurla or Sawantwadi in the morning, then your drop to Chipi airport or onward travel. If you have a fourth day, add more time on the beach and let someone else drive.
Season and weather
The monsoon turns the Konkan green and dramatic, but heavy rain means rough seas, fewer water sports and slower roads. Winter is the busiest and most comfortable season. Check conditions before you travel and ask us for current advice when you plan.
